Making the Best of the New Year

December 31, 2011

Be very careful, then, how you live—not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil. Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord’s will is.
(Ephesians 5:15-17).

The Christmas season is over and as always, it’s been one full of activity. From family gatherings to purchasing gifts, it’s been a busy time, and now a new year is just around the corner. Many resolutions will be made for the New Year while some will succeed and some won’t. We can be about many things throughout the year, but the question we need to ask ourselves is, am I doing the very best thing I could be?

As we look into Luke’s gospel we come to the account of Jesus visiting Martha and Mary and we read about making choices, good ones and better ones.

Jesus and the disciples came to the village where Martha and Mary lived, and then Martha opened her home to Jesus. It was during this time that Martha became busy, hurrying around attempting to prepare a meal for Jesus, while Mary sat at the feet of Jesus, choosing to listen to Him.

This didn’t go over so well as Martha became agitated and began to complain to Jesus about the fact that here she is preparing this meal for Him and getting no help from Mary. Jesus addressed Martha saying, “Martha, Martha,” the Lord answered, “you are worried and upset about many things, but only one thing is needed. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken from her.” (Luke 10:41-42). There wasn’t anything terrible that Martha was doing, but what Mary chose to do was much more worthwhile.

As we enter into this New Year, our goal should be like that of Mary’s, choosing to do those things that will be of eternal value. Begin by prayerfully seeking what God would have you to commit to. Once He has revealed the direction He would have you to pursue, ask Him to give you the strength to stay committed to that goal.

Begin by looking at your schedule. Is everything on your schedule necessary? Have you included time with God? It’s important that we find time to read God’s Word and to pray. There is so much that can be prayed for, such as friends, family, your church and Pastor, co-workers, the nation, and much more.

Have you scheduled time with your family? During family times, it’s important to find activities that will spark an interest with all family members. Be sure to stay away from distractions and be dedicated to strengthening relationships within your family.

There are so many other directions that God may reveal to you. However He directs you, the important thing is to be obedient to Him knowing and understanding His will for you and making the most of every opportunity He presents you with.

Have a blessed New Year!
